Mon commentaire?

My Best Friend, Rory GILMORE

The series has two protagonists: witty “thirty-something” mother Lorelai Gilmore and her intellectual teenage daughter Rory. Their backstory is established early in the show: Lorelai grew up in Hartford with her old moneyparents, Richard and Emily, but always felt stifled by this environment. She accidentally became pregnant at age sixteen and left home a year later to raise Rory in the close-knit town of Stars Hollow. Lorelai found work and shelter at the Independence Inn, where she eventually progressed from maid to executive manager. Lorelai and Rory develop a very close relationship, living like best friends, and Lorelai is proud of the independent life she has formed away from her parents. In the pilot episode, she is forced to go to them when Rory is admitted to Chilton Preparatory School, but she cannot afford the tuition fees. Emily and Richard agree to provide a loan, so long as the girls join them every Friday night for dinner. This sets up the show’s primary conflict, as the Gilmores are forced to face their differences and complicated past. The contrasting mother–daughter relationships of Emily–Lorelai and Lorelai–Rory become a defining theme of the show. Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has summarized the core of Gilmore Girls:

“I think the theme was always family and connection. I always felt like the underlying thing about Gilmore was that, if you happened to be born into a family that doesn’t really understand you, go out and make your own. That’s what Lorelai did. She went out and she made her own family. The ironic twist in her life is that then this daughter that she created this half family for, likes the family that she left. It was a cycle of crazy family.”

The series also focuses on both girls’ ambition: Rory to attend an Ivy League college and become a journalist, and Lorelai to open an inn with her best friend Sookie St. James. The romantic relationships of the protagonists are another key feature; throughout the series Lorelai has a “will-they-won’t-they” dynamic with her friend, local diner owner Luke Danes, while also harboring unresolved feelings for Rory’s father, Christopher Hayden. Rory has three boyfriends during the run of the show – local boy Dean Forrester, mysterious, well read bad boy Jess Mariano, and wealthy charismatic Logan Huntzberger. The quirky townspeople of Stars Hollow are a constant presence. Along with series-long and season-long arcs, Gilmore Girls is also episodic in nature, with mini-plots within each episode – such as a town festival, an issue at Lorelai’s inn, or a school project of Rory’s.

It’s a Mother-Daughter thing…

img_6011

This show aired in October 2000 and I remember watching it when I was 15-16 years old. Rory Gilmore became my best friend at first sight. If you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll probably think that I hate western series and movies, but that’s not the case. I used to love a lot of movies and shows and I will be writing about it more and more. You will then understand where I’m heading at, starting with Rory G.

Rory is a 16 year-old girl who lives with a mother and barely knows her father. She is very smart, she loves to read, she studies very hard to fulfill her dream which is studying at Harvard after finishing High School. She has a strong relationship with her mother, she trusts her, she’s her best friend.Well, when I watched the first episode, I felt I had so much in common with her. I also grew up with my mom, without a father and few friends. I was very smart, shy, I had (and still have) a strong relationship. I was literally seeing my own life on TV. Thanks to Rory, I started reading and dreaming of having my own dream to follow and work hard for. I admired her steadiness and sometimes envied her stable life. She didn’t have any major problems and she would always stay focused on her dream not matter what. When she fell in love for the first time, then broke up, I was as devastated as she was, I could feel every emotions and sometimes wished I was there with her to ease the pain. I had never felt so connected to anyone like I was with Rory Gilmore. This is the kind of show I really loved to watch from Hollywood even though they also paved the way for teenage sex (Rory did her first time with her ex-boyfriend who happened to be married at the time, but thank God she was already 18 and studying at Yale University), it was less obvious than today.

After all that’s been said, I recommend this show to anyone who’s looking for an inspiring role model especially if you have a teenage daughter. I love this show so much that I usually watch the 7 seasons every year, in September, when school is about to start. Actually, I think I will just buy the whole 7 seasons on the iTunes Store and watch it on my iPad, in English of course.

My Comment?

I think it’s this movie that made me fall in love with Dilraba Dilmurat… She was stunning, I mean, no one could’ve done this job better than her not even Yang Mi or Liu Yi Fei…

I don’t have much to say about it, the above description from wikipedia says it all, I just wanted to mention one more time the role of the woman in historical dramas and certainly in the Chinese society. Gongsun Li is seen as a strong, independent, intelligent and beautiful woman. She’s independent and she will stay independent no matter what the emperor says or wants. She defends the oppressed and defies the oppressor. Moreover, She is excellent in Martial Arts and military tactics… I love it when she finally falls in love with the emperor who kidnapped her at first, they have a beautiful love story but because of her free attitude and mind, the emperor can’t possess her and it drives him crazy. Well, I recommend this drama and I give it a 10/10.

Can we go back to the 80s?

Did you ever wish you were born in a different generation?

Well, I did and still do…
Ever since I started speaking English, I always wanted to find a way to improve and the best way to do so is to immerse yourself in the culture whether it’s movies, music, books or else, I’m totally buying it ! But the problem is, you need to get the proper English not only the colloquial one spoken on the streets. So I figured it would be best to listen to Rock bands (e.g. The Beatles) and watch movies starting from the 80s. That’s how I discovered and fell in love with Molly Ringwald, I learned to dance with “Footloose”and Patrick Dempsey taught me that we cannot buy Love.

Before starting to introduce you to my favorite movies (cf photos), let me explain why I chose the 80s. Indeed, I’ve always been a helpless romantic and dreamer. I’m in love with Love itself and especially good love stories based on Respect and Kindness. Nowadays, people take their relationship for granted. A man will no longer fight for the woman he loves, he will no longer pay any attention to the details (gifts, flowers…) because he thinks “there are plenty of fish in the sea”. Actually, he just needs to download an application like Tinder, Happen and it’s a done deal, the same goes for the woman I know it because I’ve been there myself. In 2018, Love has become a temporary emotion and sex is its mean of satisfaction, and I feel like this is the kind of message that’s being sent in movies and TVshows nowadays. To be honest, I used to watch a lot of them but now I feel like this is not the way I want to live anymore, I’m having an awakening and starting to embrace my true-self, not trying to please anyone and if they don’t like it, fine, I can live with it. As a woman, I thing it’s very important to be cherished, loved, taken care of without having to give anything in return. A man should treat his wife the way he treats his mother and the way he would like his sister to be treated. This is a basic rule of nature, treat the people around you the way you would like to be treated, I don’t think that’s complicated. But today, in the Western World (or elsewhere), people do whatever they want without even respecting the sensibility of others !! It’s completely outrageous and beware of the names they will call you if you’re not a good “sheep”. Well… I’m sorry, this is the way it is, I’m a human being, I’m conscious and I can make the difference between good and evil, and what’s acceptable and what is not. I don’t need bogus theories which are complete nonsense to please the masses. It might be a bit cliché but “BE yourself and THINK for yourself”…

Anyway, after all’s been said, let’s get to the quick introduction of the movies cited below and I will begin with FOOTLOOSE (main lead: Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer) which totally relates to my point stated in the second paragraph of this post. What’s the story? A boy moves from Chicago and ends up living in the small town of Bomont. He loves dancing but can’t fulfill his wish because there are some restrictions in the little town where people go to Church on Sundays and consider dancing as evil. He will start fighting these laws alongside his new friends Willard and Ariel (Wikipedia) Do you understand my point so far? If you don’t and I’m pretty sure that is the case, then it doesn’t matter because when I first watched this movie few years ago, I was footloosing and dancing around the house and talking about freedom of dance etc. Well, today I realize that it may be a whole agenda going on here because in our society it’s like a shame to be talking about God, Faith, Spirituality, actually it’s boring and not “cool” at all. People who go to Church or to the Mosque are oftentimes ridiculed, insulted, marginalized by society. The more young, wild and free you act, the more you get praised by society and the propaganda started right in the 80s. You might think that the word “propaganda” is a be strong here but I think not. Indeed, it’s exactly what’s going on. Some talk about “Tolerance”, “Equality”, “Freedom of speech” but it’s clearly a myth because when you are against or when you don’t accept the popular beliefs you are automatically stigmatized… It goes on and on and my question would be: Are we building a godless society? When I was studying in Barcelona we had a lesson about religions in our society and the teacher asked us what is our greatest fear, and a girl from Russia answered: A Society in which there would be no God. I was totally surprised because it’s very rare to meet this kind of people with such thoughts today…

Next on the list, we have CAN’T BUY ME LOVE (main lead: Patrick Dempsey and Amanda Peterson), is the typical american love story, the NERD who falls in love with the Prom’ Queen… The story? Ronald Miller is a typical high school nerd living in suburban Tucson, Arizona. He has spent all summer mowing lawns to save up for a telescope. At an opportune moment, he makes a deal with next-door neighbor and popular cheerleader Cynthia “Cindy” Mancini. Cindy had borrowed her mother’s expensive suede outfit without permission, to wear to a party, only to have Quint accidentally spill red wine on it. Cindy reluctantly agrees to help Ronald look “cool” by pretending to be his girlfriend for a month for $1000, even though she already has a boyfriend named Bobby who is attending the University of Iowa (Wikipedia)I know it might be a bit corny but honestly it’s pure and simple just how I think life of a normal teenager should be, there’s nothing wrong with being a NERD everybody deserves to love and be loved in return…

Finally, last but not least, the best of the best, to me she’s the best teenage actress of the 80s: Molly RINGWALD (Molly Kathleen Ringwald (born February 18, 1968) is an American actress, singer, and author. She was cast in her first major role as Molly in the NBC sitcom The Facts of Life (1979–80) after a casting director saw her playing an orphan in a stage production of the musical Annie. She and several other members of the original Facts of Life cast were let go when the show was reworked by the network. She subsequently made her motion picture debut in the independent film Tempest (1982), which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year. Ringwald is known for her collaborations with filmmaker John Hughes, having appeared in three of his films. After appearing in the successful Hughes films Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and Pretty in Pink (1986), Ringwald became a teen icon. She later starred in The Pick-up Artist (1987), Fresh Horses (1988) and For Keeps (1988). She starred in many films in the 1990s, most notably Something to Live for: The Alison Gertz Story (1992) and The Stand (1994). Ringwald is part of the “Brat Pack” and she was ranked number 1 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Teen Stars. Ringwald currently portrays Mary Andrews on The CW television series Riverdale). Wikipedia

. I’ve seen all her movies and selected 3 of them as the best:

  1. PRETTY IN PINK (High school senior Andie Walsh lives with her underemployed working class father, Jack, in a Chicago suburb. Andie’s best friend, Phil “Duckie” Dale, is in love with her, but is afraid to tell her how he truly feels. In school, Duckie and Andie, along with their friends, are harassed and bullied by the arrogant “richie” kids, specifically Benny Hanson and her boyfriend Steff McKee, who is secretly interested in Andie.) Wikipedia
  2. THE BREAKFAST CLUB (On Saturday March 24, 1984 at Shermer High School in Illinois, Pampered Claire Standish, champion wrestler Andrew Clarke, geek Brian Johnson, outcast Allison Reynolds, and delinquent John Bender gather in the school library for weekend detention. Assistant principal Richard Vernon instructs them not to talk, move from the seats, or sleep until they are released that afternoon. He assigns them a 1,000-word essay in which each must describe to him “who they think they are”. He leaves, returning only occasionally to check on them.) Wikipedia
  3. SIXTEEN CANDLES (High school sophomore Samantha “Sam” Baker struggles to go through the day on her 16th birthday, which her entire family has forgotten about because her older sister, Ginny, is getting married the next day. She is also plagued by infatuation with a popular and attractive senior, Jake Ryan. At school, she fares no better when she finds out that a completed “sex quiz”, which she tried to surreptitiously slip to her friend Randy, never reached her and, unbeknownst to either of them, was picked up by Jake. Despite her name not being on the quiz, Sam is still a bit panicked because the quiz contains sensitive information, such as how she is a virgin and is saving herself for Jake.) Wikipedia

Mon Commentaire?
