MELROSE PLACE PODCAST

Hello guys !!

How is 2019 going so far ?

Well, if you’ve read my other posts you might have noticed that I don’t know how to start but I’m working on that catchphrase thingy…  Anyway, today I want to share my best 2019’s moment with you all and I hope you will be as thrilled as I am. It happened two weeks ago, long story short, I woke up pretty early that day and I was looking for some good Shows to buy on the iTunes Store. I first looked for Charmed but didn’t find it, then I checked Melrose Place and I couldn’t find the Show but there it was: Melrose Place Podcast. OMG, had I ever thought that I could actually listen or find such a Podcast? Absolutely not.

Jenny and Dan Hill are husband and wife who love Melrose Place and you can tell, especially Dan who knows absolutely everything about the characters and more !! I started listening to the first episode and I knew I would love it to the end, I am nowhere near tired of it and I’m having the time of my life, really, I think it’s even better than watching the show itself. I remember the first time I watched the Show, it was 2 years ago because obviously I was born in 1991 so basically, I was a year and a half when it first aired back then. To me, it turned out to be one of the best 90’s Shows ever. I will just speak about the Podcast and I will be posting about the Show later on because there are so much things to say about the characters etc. I’m a huge fan of 90’s shows, it was the best period especially in terms of Fashion. I can’t wait to share more of it with you but for now, let’s focus on the Podcast…

The Podcast

It’s as if you were having a major conversation with your best friend about the latest trend. I love that feeling because I remember when Desperate Housewives was a thing few years ago, I would spend hours commenting, criticizing every single episode with my friends at school and sometimes we would re-watch it and laugh and criticize the exact same thing or some other parts that we missed out. That’s exactly what’s happening here with Jenny and Dan. They are so funny and cute at the same time, I mean it’s the best way to keep a good relationship with your husband, they’re like the best of friends. I don’t think anybody could do better than them on commenting Melrose Place.

It’s funny, sarcastic, true, they know how to dwell on the abnormal hidden behavior, the thing you won’t necessarily notice while watching the show. For instance, Billy is one of the main characters and he lives with Alison (another main character). Honestly, he is not a hottie I could agree with that but I didn’t realize how they were trying so hard to make him seem like one, but Dan pointed it out: he is topless on every episode showing his muscles. Then there’s the fact that at the beginning of the show, he has different jobs on every new episode, showing the fact that he is unreliable, immature and so wishy washy. It’s really difficult to concentrate on each character when there is a whole bunch of them. I personally tend to concentrate on the most interesting story-lines so I don’t think much of the characters. But I might watch the show again so that I can check the details mentioned by Dan and Jenny. I also love it when they give their opinions and you can feel the love or the hate towards some characters, especially Billy, I laugh so hard when Dan starts raging on him. I can’t wait to listen to further episodes and since I know the show, I just can’t wait to hear their comments on the hot topics: cheating, cat-fights, weddings, divorces…

I’ve been laughing all the way to work, on the train, the metro and it’s worth the while so I wanted to share this information with you guys. You should definitely download this Podcast, you won’t be disappointed. If you’re a fan, it would be fun walking down memory lane and if you’re not, well, you will learn a whole bunch of new expressions and vocabularies to make your English sound more natural.

Story of Yanxi Palace

Release date: July 7, 2018

70 épisodes

Main lead

Synopsis

My comments

Another great drama and story ! I recommend this drama especially because it discusses many subjects as far as the Chinese community is concerned, in China and outside China (in the US in this case). I like how Chinese people express their feeling about having to deal with some stereotypes when they live in foreign countries; for example, working in a Chinese restaurant, having to deal with visa procedures to study abroad etc. This story is about love and so but it also includes many story lines which show us a side of the Chinese society that we don’t know. There is the corruption part, about a government’s official who accept bribes from a rich entrepreneur which shows us that nobody’s perfect. I mean for someone like me who is really amazed by China and its evolution, it’s good to know that there is more to the story, if I can put it that way… Anyway, I might watch the drama again as usual I always watch these dramas twice especially to check my improvement in listening comprehension so enjoy !

I don’t have anything else to say except that the two lead actors (Luo Jin and Tiffany Tang) got married at the end of the year 2018 and I was very happy for them. I’ve been following them along their career together and I’m very proud of their achievements and good vibes they send to their fans.

A love so Beautiful

It starts off with high school classmates Chen Xiao Xi and Jiang Chen who are also neighbors. Xiao Xi, a cheerful girl who doesn’t study much, is expressive about her admiration towards Jiang Chen, the popular guy known for his looks and high grades. Together with their fellow classmates the funny Lu Yang, athletic but loyal Jingjing, and cool swimming team member Wu Bo Song, they embark on high school life to university until their adult life.

My comments

It’s definitely a 10/10, being the cutest drama I’ve seen this year… If you want to dream and have fantasies over the genuine, pure, selfless Love we’re all yearning for, well, this drama is for you.

Chen Xiao Xi is in love and she will scream it to the World. She’s maybe not perfect, smart or gifted with any talent but she knows how to go after what she truly wants and especially who she truly loves: Jiang Chen. He is tall, smart, shuai, mature and wishes to become a doctor. They live in the same building and spend a lot of time together but he doesn’t love her back until she starts to befriend the amazing swimmer Wu Bo Song. And I think this is the part that led me to the end of this drama. Men might all be the same at some point, it’s unbelievable! You know when your ex starts to call you back just because you’ve moved on? LMAO That’s exactly the same when you love a guy and he doesn’t show you any interest but the moment there’s another guy who shows you the kindness you deserve then you’ll see rivalry at its peak !  It’s pretty funny to see how things turn out for the best for Xiao Xi so go on an check it out !

My comment

Well, I feel like all these Chinese dramas have the same storyline but there is something different about this one because it’s all about two Youngsters madly in love who are trying to make some changes for the better. They work hard together despite the economic crisis they are facing and more, Muzi’s mother who wants her daughter to be marrying a man of the same background.

I really loved this story because I guess, just like me, a lot of girls are looking for that man whose going to be there for them no matter what and fight together for a living, to live a better Life. A fantasy I guess…

It’s a 10/10 !

Fishing for Words, Idioms, Phrases…

Hello Poleegloters!

How is your week going so far? Don’t worry, be Happy !

Well, I’ve been trying some new experiences to improve my languages, it’s been fun and very productive so I’ve decided to write a quick article about how to go “fishing for words, idioms, phrases…”.

First, what is fishing? According to google search, fishing is “the activity of catching fish, either for food or as a sport”, so I’ve decided to apply this method in my pursuit for more vocabulary.

Second, where to fish? Basically everywhere, at anytime: movies, shows, Tv shows, music lyrics, ads, series, magazines, newspapers… You need to be hungry for knowledge, be curious and give a chance to every topic whether it is interesting or not, you need to force yourself because as a future Translator or Interpreter, you will not be stuck in just one field of activity. I remember last summer during my training, I was working for a Conference named France Vet. I met this incredible man, an interpreter who had great experience in the field, he was very good. The Conference was about animals, veterinary medicine, not an easy one, but he was used to it as he told me, he had been the interpreter for the same conference for years. I got to be in the booth with and he had no computer, no vocabulary list, nothing, he just had a paper and a pencil to draw, his iPhone, and headphones on ready to start interpreting. I, on the other hand, was feeding my curiosity with new words and expressions from the Medical Glossary. My point is, that man wasn’t a veterinary medicine expert, he worked on several assignments around the globe and yet he was able to adapt to this rather complicated topic. So to me, the job starts now, and brings us to our last but not least point…

Third, how to fish? Grab a pen and a notebook, set up your fishing rod and be ready to catch a lot of colorful expressions and idioms that will make you sound like a native English speaker.

  • Do not write down the entire script of the movie or show, the purpose here is to identify the words and expressions that you don’t understand. You can find some idioms or phrases that come from a popular belief, a famous book or some historical facts. For example, in the tvshow The Originals there was the saying “Uneasy is the head that wears the crown” which is a line from the play King Henry the Fourth, part Two, by William Shakespeare and refers to a person who has great responsibilities such as a king and is constantly worried, therefore doesn’t sleep soundly. In this episode, this saying was used by Marcel who was wary of his old friend and mentor Klaus Mickaelson, an original vampire willing to do anything to take back the town of New Orleans, to be the new King of the vampires. So Marcel was becoming paranoid and used this saying in a conversation to imply the obvious reason being that his Kingdom was in danger.

  • Beware of the language being used in the audio or the video. Whether it’s formal or informal, in which part of the World it is spoken etc. This is crucial. You obviously know that several parts of the World were colonized. The Commonwealth is comprised of 53 states members, so the language is not the same in London or in Accra (Ghana, Africa). Be open-minded and watch movies and productions from these countries, try to dive into their culture. For example in Africa (or in the Caribbean, Solomon Islands and so on), several English speakers would mix the English with the local languages, it is called the Pijin language. It’s the same for the European Spanish and the Latin american Spanish; the thing here is that South American Spanish is the most spoken around the World but European Spanish is the official language in Translation/Interpretation, we have to refer to the RAE (Real Academia Española) and be sure that the words or expressions we use exist in this dictionary. There is all the more reason to learn more words and expressions from one continent to the other and know their proper meaning in European Spanish. The same rules apply to the German language which is spoken in Switzerland, Austria and Germany; and of course in the Chinese language.

  • After collecting you little treasures, you can try to write an essay or an article and use what you’ve learned. Use synonyms, switch the form of the verbs, replace one word with another. Have fun and make mistakes, it’s the only way to learn ! By doing this, you’ll be memorizing these words in no time…
